The concept
of agency in sustainability transitions is under-researched from a theoretical
point of view. While many publications refer to actors or agency as subjects of
research, no comprehensive theoretical framework has been established that
conceptualizes actors and agency in their embeddedness in the system and across
levels (micro-meso-macro, niche vs. regime). Furthermore, systems under
transition usually question existing actor roles and lead to dynamic and
changing role constellations in different phases of the transition.
