Actors in Transition (TransAct): Development and Publication of a Conceptual Framework

The concept of agency in sustainability transitions is under-researched from a theoretical point of view. While many publications refer to actors or agency as subjects of research, no comprehensive theoretical framework has been established that conceptualizes actors and agency in their embeddedness in the system and across levels (micro-meso-macro, niche vs. regime). Furthermore, systems under transition usually question existing actor roles and lead to dynamic and changing role constellations in different phases of the transition.

Thus, the research questions of TransAct focus on the following aspects:

  • How can we conceptualize actors, actor roles and agency in the dynamic transition process?
  • How can we capture the embeddedness of actors, actor roles and agency on different levels?
